Hello to all of our September babies and happy birthday to you! This month’s birthstone is the beautiful sapphire and we are so happy to welcome this month with this gorgeous gem. Here at Jaimie Nicole we have the perfect gift for anyone celebrating a birthday this month. But before we get into that, we wanted to give you a little history and background information on sapphire.
Sapphires have been prized as great gemstones since 800BC. Rulers of ancient Persia believed the sky was painted blue by the reflection of sapphire stones. And a great poet once described the sapphire as “the blue of a clear sky just minutes after sundown.” Blue sapphires were a holy stone to the catholic church and to Ancient Persians, who believed they made the sky blue with their reflections. To some religions, the blue color of the sapphire represents the heavens. Sapphires are stones of the apocalypse, and ancient lore held that the tablets upon which the Ten Commandments were written, were actually sapphire.
The sapphire has, for centuries, been seen as a symbol of the heavens, a guardian of innocence, a bestower of truth, a promoter of good health, and a preserver of chastity. It is believed to brings gifts of fulfillment, joy, prosperity, inner peace and beauty. Some wore it to ward off illness or as protection while traveling. In the middle ages, people believed wearing a sapphire suppressed negative thoughts. It also has been long believed to have a curing power for natural ailments. In ancient Persia, if ground up, it was used as an all-purpose medicine. Ivan the Terrible of Russia stated that the sapphire strengthened the heart and muscles and endowed a person with courage. Others said it was an anecdote for poison- it killed snakes on site and if engraved with the figure of a man or a ram, would cure all illness and elevate the owner to a high position.
But the most important attribute of the sapphire was said to be the protection against sorcery- it was thought to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Sapphires were once used to ward off poisonous creatures and kill snakes hiding nearby. They also provided advanced warning against hidden dangers. As a tool for self-improvement, sapphires are a wonderful way to keep your life in check. They are said to have a powerful and transformative gemstone energy that may work quickly and drastically. They will help you connect to the universe, that is, they can open your internal and spiritual self to the powers of the universe.

Here are some general tips for caring for all jewelry
• Always store your jewelry in a jewelry box. Moisture and salt encourage the appearance of tarnish so make sure you keep your jewelry as dry as you possibly can. Do not store jewelry in the bathroom.
• Make sure to fasten your chain necklaces and bracelets when storing them so that they don’t become a tangled mess!
• If you are having a great deal of trouble with a knot in a chain, your best tools are a needle and some patience.
• Here are some activities where we recommend removing jewelry. Remove jewelry when coming in contact with harsh cleaning chemicals; remove rings when coming in contact with rocks or gardening; remove necklaces when holding grabby babies; remove delicate bracelets when wearing a nubby sweater (they may get caught).
How to best care for vermeil and rose gold filled jewelry
• Store your vermeil jewelry in an airtight container.
• Make sure to remove before applying perfumes or lotions.
• Chlorine, especially at high temperatures, can permanently damage or discolor your gold vermeil jewelry. Avoid wearing gold vermeil jewelry while using chlorine bleach or while in a pool or hut tub.
• It is best to clean vermeil jewelry with a soft and dry 100% cotton or micro fiber cloth.
How to best care for sterling silver jewelry
• All sterling silver naturally tarnishes or oxidizes over time. Prolonged exposure to the air and your body’s natural chemistry can expedite this process.
• Avoid direct contact with showers, perfume, lotion, chlorine, and bleach.
• Storing silver jewelry in an air tight container will slow the oxidation process.
• If you notice some tarnish starting to build on your silver jewelry, simply purchase a microfiber cleaning cloth or a special jewelry cloth and gently polish your silver pieces back to perfection!
• Be sure to use different areas of the cloth to avoid spreading tarnish.
How to best care for gemstones
• At Jaimie Nicole a lot of our jewelry contains semi-precious gems such as amethyst, pyrite, turquoise, tourmaline, etc.
• Not every gem is to be cared for in the same way. Gemstone hardness is measured by something called the Mohs scale. This scale rates the hardness of minerals from 1-10. A diamond, for example, is rated a 10 and is one of the hardest minerals. Conversely, a mineral such as talc is rated a 1. This means that it is very soft and can be scratched and damaged easily.
• Generally, gemstones rated above a 7 on the Mohs scale can be cleaned using warm water, a touch of mild detergent, and a soft brush. For those rated under 7, swap the soft brush for a soft cloth.
• Many gemstones are also susceptible to damage by chemicals, water and even sunlight, where prolonged exposure to the latter may cause them to become paler. Examples include amethyst, aquamarine, aventurine, citrine, rose quartz, and smoky quartz. We recommend researching your specific gemstone when you feel it is time to give it a little TLC.
As always, we are here to help. If you notice that your jewelry is in need of some care, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We will be happy to help you in whatever way possible!

th year of marriage. It does not share the ancient history and lore of most other gems since it was first discovered in the 19th Century. The name Alexandrite comes from the fact that the gemstone was first discovered in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1830, on the day of Prince Alexander II of Russia’s birthday. The story of the stone’s discovery goes like this: Miners were working alone in the mountains one day, collecting emeralds. One miner gathered some stones, which looked like emeralds and took them back to the camp at the end of the day. But in the light of the campfire, the stones shone a brilliant shade of red! The miners were perplexed. When morning came, and they saw that the stones were green again in the light, they realized that they had found a new and mysterious gem.
In 1839, the stones were identified and named "alexandrite." Because the stones appeared green or red, the same colors as Old Imperial Russia’s military colors, the stone became the national stone of tsarist Russia. In time, alexandrite would become one of the most prized gemstones amongst Russian Aristocracy. However, the abundance of alexandrite in Russia did not last forever. Practically all of Russia’s alexandrite was mined during the 19th Century. However, just when the gems were thought to be headed to extinction, even larger deposits were found in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, the island south of India. Later, Brazil became another contributor to the world supply of the stone.
Alexandrite encourages romance. It is also said that through the stone, joy enters the lives of people with too much self-discipline. The stone reminds us of our purpose in life and our origin. It gives hope to those who are in despair about their lives. It brings strength and constantly reminds them of the light. With its changing color, it is a reminder that life is not always what it seems to be.
Alexandrite is also useful for one’s emotional wellbeing, as well as promoting self-esteem and the ability to be appreciative of the world around us. The stone assists one in developing “inner energy changes” which correspond with age and maturation. Alexandrite can aid in centering oneself.
With all that being said, you can see why this birthstone is in high demand and will make a great gift for any friend or loved one! Our birthstone necklaces are pre-packaged and come with a card that gives a brief explanation of some of the properties of this wonderful stone. The necklace measures approximately 16” and has a 3.5” extender chain. It features eleven stunning cubic zirconia charms in this beautiful light purple hue. Style tip: layer with our multi-colored birthstone necklace to jazz up your look and add a pop of color to any outfit. Alexandrite is the perfect addition to any spring wardrobe!

. Uncut gems are often fairly ordinary looking. It's only when they are cut in a stylish form, finished, polished and made into pieces of jewelry that they become noticed. Gems have been divided into precious and semi-precious classes and classified into different varieties, species, and groups. They come in an array of colors, shapes, sizes and are gathered from all corners of the world. These properties make each and every gem special and unique.]]>
