Good Vibes Only!
Start this new decade off right by learning about the mystical evil eye, an iconic symbol that has been revered worldwide for centuries.Â
We can't think of a better way to kick off 2020 than by inviting good karma in, and keeping those bad vibes out! The New Year is a time for fresh starts, introspection, and goal setting. We've been busy doing just that at Jaimie Nicole. We wanted to do a blog post on one of our most popular and best-selling silhouettes to date: the evil eye. This iconic symbol has become more and more trendy throughout the last couple of decades, but do you know the actual significance of this ancient talisman?Â
Throughout history the evil eye has been perceived as both a curse and a powerful protective symbol. As a protective symbol, the evil or all-seeing eye, wards against evil and protects the wearer from harm. The origin of the evil eye can be traced back at least three thousand years!
As a curse, it is believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. It's a familiar look of suspicion or envy, believed to bestow bad luck or will on the receiver. Nearly every culture believed in the "gaze of malice" at some point in their history, and the signature blue and white amulets are an ever-present reminder of the tradition's stronghold in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and some regions of India.
When worn as a protective amulet, the evil eye is meant to reflect the intended curse back onto the person who has cast it on you. Naturally people began to string evil eye pendants onto necklaces, make bracelets sporting different renderings of it, and it became quite common to see pieces of jewelry with it. Wearing it as jewelry is not only a convenient way to ensure you will be protected from any ill will, but it's also a stylish way to add some personal expression to any look.
The emerging popularity of the evil eye, hamsa, and other such esoteric imagery in fashion marks the trend of a rising interest in mysticism and new age practices. People have been reading their horoscopes, finding out crystal meanings, and seeing psychics to read their fortunes for years. However, in recent years, the interest in these practices has skyrocketed.Â
